Returning to my roots to design for the life I live today. - Kaahu

Returning to my roots to design for the life I live today.

I spent years looking for modern design solutions only to realize I grew up surrounded by them.

There is a specific kind of design that only reveals itself when your hands are full. For me, that realization came with motherhood. Becoming a mother changed more than my routine; it changed my entire philosophy as a designer. I began to realize that design isn’t just about how an object looks, but about how it supports the unpredictable rhythm of our days.

You leave the house with a plan and then the day changes.

Suddenly, you’re carrying a snack, a toy, the extra essentials. You’re carrying the rhythm of someone else’s world. That’s when the difference shows up. The bag you reach for must be the one that keeps up.

I didn’t always think about design this way.

I spent years looking for the answer in modern design, only to realize I had grown up surrounded by it. Growing up, fibers like Jute and Organic Cotton were everywhere. They were so ubiquitous that I took them for granted. I didn't see them as innovative; they were just the fabric of daily life.

But as I began building Kaahu, these fibers moved from the background of my memory to the forefront of my strategy. They became the only obvious choice for a brand built on endurance.

The technical reality of these fibers is hard to ignore:

Jute: Beyond being 100% biodegradable, Jute is a carbon sequestering powerhouse. It grows without the need for pesticides or fertilizers and relies entirely on rainfall. It is one of the strongest natural vegetable fibers in existence, offering a high tensile strength that synthetic fibers struggle to mimic sustainably.

Organic Cotton: Conventional cotton is one of the most chemically intensive crops on earth. By choosing Organic, we eliminate toxic persistent pesticides and synthetic fertilizers from the ecosystem. It is a significantly better choice for the soil, the water, and the people who harvest it.

Natural materials don’t stay perfect. And that’s the point.

They soften. They wear in. They develop a character that synthetics never will.

I believe a bag should do the same. It should settle into your life and get easier to live with over time. It shouldn't get in your way. It should just keep up, while still feeling like you.

Kaahu isn't just about bags; it is about a return to the materials that have supported us for generations, reimagined for the lives we lead today.
